The Hard Core

Last winter when ice, snow, and constant, sub-zero temperatures made running less than ideal, West Philly Runners was distilled down to a small nucleus, the more sensible runners sloughed off to await the thaw. We called that small group the hard core. Really this name originated as a joke conjured up at a time when we needed to keep spirits high, while running through stinging ice mists, thundersnow and other "uncomfortable" weather phenomenon. Yet the name really does describe a special set of runners.
This year's moderate winter has been great for running, but it really hasn't let that ole hard core come through and shine above their sane counterparts. That is, except for this Sunday's Chilly Cheeks run. Julia, Casey, Heeju, Anne and Gretchen (and her sister and perhaps others I missed) headed out to Reading, PA to run through 7 miles of backwoods trails on the coldest day of the year. You are all seriously hard core.
